An add-on for the Mega Drive / Genesis system, the 32X was an attempt to bridge the gap between the older 16-bit machines and the emerging 32-bit CD-based systems. Unfortunately it was a commercial failure, and only had a small library of games.
The hardware adds two SH2 processors which do all of the heavy lifting for any raster or 3d effects the games produce. In addition to the system's access to the original Mega Drive hardware, the 32X also adds 4 Pluse-wave modulation (PWM) channels. Some games use all 3 types of sound production.
